A disturbing story. There was a family of siblings living in my neighborhood—two brothers and a sister. The two brothers easily went off the rails, while the sister and their parents seemed decent enough (at least on the surface). The parents were kind, and they were often good to me as well, so I couldn't understand how the brothers turned out the way they did.
Once, when I went to drop something off at their house, I opened the front door and noticed a strange, indescribable smell. Looking back now, I realize that must have been paint thinner.
The two brothers forced their parents to buy them a car, only to complain, "Our parents are poor, so they could only afford a pathetic car like this." They also harassed their sister, who was going to a junior college, saying, "We dropped out of high school, but our parents are playing favorites," and tried to interfere with her commute. They even stole their parents' cash cards. Fortunately, the parents had protected themselves by changing the PINs, so no money was taken, but the parents' bedroom was ransacked, prompting the police to come after mistaking it for a break-in.
The family went into hiding under the cover of night, taking advantage of the moment the sister graduated from junior college and the two brothers had left the house. When the brothers returned to an empty home—though apparently much of the furniture was left behind—they threw a massive fit, screaming, "They ran away!" and "We've been abandoned!" They barged into homes all over the neighborhood trying to extract the family's new location, but everyone was completely unaware they had even fled. People in the neighborhood realized just how desperate the parents must have been.
The brothers repeatedly forced their way into the house of the person who had been closest to the mother, shouting, "If you don't tell us, we'll wreck your house!" This led to another police intervention, this time for intimidation. After a while, they seemed to give up and stopped showing up around the neighborhood. However, a neighbor who saw them just before they vanished said the older brother was crying, saying, "Even our family abandoned us..."
I just can't bring myself to feel any sympathy for them at all. I can't help but pray that the parents and the sister managed to escape safely and are living happily now.
