Regarding the French woman who went missing seven years ago while sightseeing in Tochigi Prefecture, a new analysis of her cell phone's location data by a Swiss company has revealed that there is no trace of her ever leaving the hotel where she was staying before her location suddenly and unnaturally cut off.
On July 29, 2018, Tiphaine Véron (43) suddenly disappeared, leaving her belongings behind at the hotel in Nikko where she was staying. Ms. Véron's cell phone and other belongings have still not been found.
Up until now, there had been a sighting of Ms. Véron leaving the hotel at 10:00 AM on the 29th. However, the analysis revealed that her cell phone showed no trace of having moved away from the hotel, and its location data suddenly cut off at 11:40 AM on the 29th.
Paul-Olivier Dehaye of Hestia.ai, the Swiss company that analyzed Ms. Véron's cell phone, testified, "When she went out to the bank the day before, there are location signals showing she left the hotel. There is zero trace of Ms. Véron having left the hotel."
Furthermore, analyzing the nature of the signal cutoff, he noted, "It is likely the phone was destroyed in some way—for instance, submerged in water or run over by a train. The way the location signal cut off was so abrupt; it wasn't how a phone normally powers down."
Citing the possibility of foul play, the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances has thus far requested the Japanese government five times to provide investigative information to French authorities.
A friend of a friend, who is French, has gone missing in Nikko. It’s been a week since she disappeared and she still hasn't been found. Has there been any progress on this case...? The Japanese police's investigation was so sloppy that they took a lot of heat from French authorities. Being murdered inside a hotel is terrifying. If they know that much, you'd think they could catch the culprit using security cameras and the guest registry from back then.
The security footage probably wasn't kept. Besides, the theory that she went outside came from an employee's testimony at the hotel lobby. Back then, multiple foreigners were staying at the hotel, so it's highly likely they misidentified her. Since her phone didn't move from her room at 11:40, she was probably lured out, forced back into her room, or taken somewhere else.
Makes you wonder if some organization got rid of a French intelligence operative, doesn't it? 🥺 Could the Japanese police's reluctance to act be related to diplomacy? 🥺
