There is a man named U who, in a sense, dragged me down this path. It happened during a small drinking party at his boarding house back when we were students. He asked me, "Do you know what a pair of facing mirrors is?" I had heard of it vaguely. "Then do you know that if you place two mirrors facing each other, spirits tend to gather there?" Is that so? I shook my head. "I'll show you something good," he said, and started rummaging around in his closet. "This is it." What he pulled out was a box about ten cubic centimeters in size. Its surface was black and rough, and all the edges were sealed with tape—at first glance, you couldn't tell what it was. "You see, I took apart six square mirrors bought from a store and built a box with the reflective sides facing inward." I see, so that rough surface was the back of the mirrors.
"What do you think? It's the ultimate pair of facing mirrors, isn't it? The light that was scattering randomly before this box was closed is now trapped inside, having lost its exit, and continues to fly around the inside of the box at the speed of light. Forever, as long as I don't open it." For some reason, a chill ran down my spine. "Now, what is being reflected in those six mirrors inside this box? That is a philosophical question. But let's lower the conversation to a level that suits you. Spiritual entities caught between facing mirrors are immobilized by their own gazes. Do you understand this? Then, this box can be called a perfect prison. So, I'll tell you this: 'I've decided. I am never going to open this.'" At that moment, I heard a deafening sound. But I immediately realized it wasn't actually a sound. It was like that inaudible noise you get when a television is on nearby. He gave a faint smile and put the box back into the closet. Since then, the box hasn't been opened yet. Probably. To be continued in "Future Prediction"
