I Found a Planner at Shinjuku Station

Well, strictly speaking, we never actually met...

More than ten years ago, I found a system planner at Shinjuku Station. It belonged to someone working at a large corporation with an office building in Nishi-Shinjuku. Driven by a bit of unworthy temptation, I didn't take it to the police; instead, I mailed it directly to the company address listed on the business cards inside. I remember thinking it was an unusual name for a man.

The very next day, he called to thank me, but I happened to be away from my desk, and a mean-spirited senior colleague hung up the phone without even asking for his contact info.

Several years later, the landlord of the boarding house where I was living at the time brought me an arranged marriage proposal. As soon as I heard that unusual name—rare for a man—I immediately remembered the owner of the planner.

However, the meeting was called off twice. The first time due to his schedule, and the second time due to mine. The landlord said, "Perhaps it wasn't meant to be," and the matter was dropped.

And now, in the present. I found his name among the victims of the massive Sumatra offshore tsunami.

He is someone I have never even met once, but I can't help praying that he will survive and keep going. By the way, I am still single.
