My mom is Taiwanese, and I just remembered her saying that when her brother was drafted and became a base gatekeeper, they were under strict orders to stand completely at attention without blinking, and because of that, he saw a ghost. The guards at the National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine in Taipei still do that today. Since it's a place tourists can visit, they have to stand completely still without blinking even when people flash cameras at them. I've been there, and they feel less like living humans and more like wax figures. I don't know if they sweat or not, but their skin has an intense shine to it. Taiwan is even further south than Okinawa, so I think it's a brutal job.
