The Budgie Died

When I was in the lower grades of elementary school, my pet budgie, which I loved very much, passed away. Since there was a river nearby, I decided to take it down to the river and let the current carry it away.

The riverbank was covered in small stones, making a crunching and grating sound as I walked. I walked about 50 meters along the riverbank until I reached a spot underneath a bridge. As I squatted down and tried to set the bird adrift in the river, suddenly a voice asked, "Did it die?"

Startled, I turned around to find a thin woman standing there. "Yeah," I replied curtly, then turned back toward the river and released the bird. At the time, all I was thinking internally was, *Will I get in trouble for letting this go in the river?* and *I wish she'd just go away.*

"It floated away, didn't it?" she said. "Yeah," I answered, and when I turned back around, no one was there. I was left completely stunned.

When I thought about it later, I hadn't heard any footsteps on the riverbank, and the area around the river was surrounded by about five-meter-high stone walls. To get out of the river area, you had to go all the way back to the entrance 50 meters away.

That was when I thought, *It was a ghost.*

Since it was the middle of the day, I wasn't scared at all, but it was a bizarre experience that happened in broad daylight.
