I don't remember where I saw it, but a long time ago, something like this was on TV. I don't remember all the details, so I'm sorry if I get anything wrong.
Once upon a time, there were an older senior and a younger junior employee, and apparently, the junior had feelings for the senior. The junior mustered up the courage to confess their love, but the senior coldly brushed it off.
A little while later, on a certain night, the senior was drinking alcohol while looking out at the apartment building across the street. There was a considerable distance between the senior's apartment and the one opposite, allowing the senior to see the entire facade of the other building.
The apartment building opposite was roughly square-shaped, with windows lined up at regular intervals. Some rooms had their lights on, while others were dark, completely random.
Meanwhile, inside that building, a man wearing a hood and holding a knife was wandering from room to room. He visited each apartment one by one, killing the residents, and adjusting the lights in each room—turning them on or off—with every murder.
Surprisingly, the man seemed to have a heart; when he came across a family of three sleeping lined up together like Japanese characters in a futon, he would quietly turn off the light and leave them alone without killing them. The man continued his spree of murders, turning lights on and off until he reached the very last room.
The scene cuts back to the senior, still watching the apartment across the street. As the senior took a sip of alcohol, they noticed something. The lights in the lined-up windows were turned on in such a way that they formed the shape of the words "I LOVE YOU."
Smiling, the senior thought, "Did they go around asking each resident to do this? That's actually pretty romantic," feeling a newfound respect for the junior.
The director probably set it up that way to highlight how psychopathic the junior was, but the senior's happy face at the very end left me with such an indescribable feeling... I mean, aside from everything else, did they really have to kill people one by one just for that? It was a story that left me feeling uneasy and unsatisfied.
