When I was in the eighth grade, my younger brother and I were smoking cigarettes in my second-floor room with the curtains closed. I suddenly needed to take a crap, so I went to the bathroom. When I came back, my brother was peeking outside through a gap in the curtains. "What's wrong?" I asked. "Bro, it's that woman. It's definitely her," he replied. I secretly took a look, and saw a woman wearing a red sweater, a red skirt, and carrying a red bag, staring right at us. (Even though she shouldn't have been able to see us through the curtains.) After staring our way for a while, our dog started barking. At that, the woman briskly walked away.
What was that woman about...? My mom had been going out on night walks with the middle-aged lady next door to lose weight. Two days before, my mom came home looking pale as a ghost. "A ghost! It's a ghost!" she gasped. Here is what happened: The two of them had finished their walk and were almost back home. A man on a bicycle rode past them from the front. Just then, a voice called out from behind them, where no one should have been. "Excuse me." Startled, they turned around, and standing there was a woman wearing a red sweater, a red skirt, and carrying a red bag. "That man on the bicycle keeps riding past me. I'm so scared. Could you walk with me to my house?" the woman said. Since it was too scary for just the women, they decided to have the husband of the neighbor woman come along too. (My old man hadn't come home yet.) They kept walking for a while, but they never seemed to reach her place. (They hadn't used a car because she said it was close.) And finally, they ended up right back where the woman had first called out to them. My mom said, "Hey, isn't this right where we were earlier...?" The red woman was nowhere to be seen.
When my mom came back and told us that story, my brother, my dad, and I just laughed it off. But since the neighboring couple had been there too, it couldn't have been a lie. We figured they must have just been messed with.
Three days after seeing the woman from the second-floor window, I was walking the dog around the neighborhood at around 10:00 PM. As I got close to my house, a man on a bicycle rode past me from the front. "Excuse me." I don't think I had ever been that startled in my fourteen years of life. Up until that exact second, there genuinely had been nobody behind me. I turned around. Standing there was the red woman. Before the woman could say anything, I yelled, "No!" With that, the woman walked away. Neither I nor my family have ever seen that red woman since.
