Strange Tales The reason I kidnapped a little girl who was playing in the park was because I had lost my pet dog. I started keeping her in my basement, but she wouldn't warm up to me at all, so I gouged out both of her eyes. After that, the girl became completely obedient and started showing an attitude fitting for a pet. Meals were twice a day. I gave them to her before leaving for work and after returning. There was only one entrance and exit. A locked door where I would appear and then vanish. The girl has no name. I don't give names to pets.
Two years passed. On a whim, I had a fixed, non-opening window installed in the basement wall. Of course, it was just for decoration. There is nothing on the other side. I told the girl this: "Beyond the window is the ocean."
Five years passed. Holding a pet cat that I gave her as a tranquilizer, the girl always sits in front of the window. And she happily talks to the cat on her lap about the ocean beyond the window. Listening to the sound of waves that shouldn't be heard.
◆ I opened the basement door as usual, and locked it from the inside. When I turned around, the girl was covering her face with her hands and crying. She was crying, saying that the cat had run away. I froze. There was no cat. The room is simple. There is no furniture to hide behind. Only I can unlock the single door. And it was definitely locked until I just opened it now. I grabbed the girl's hand and demanded to know why the cat was gone. Then, the girl cried, saying that it went beyond the window, that because she talked so much about the ocean, it went over there. I checked the fixed window. As expected, there was no sign of it having been opened. Even if it had opened, there would only be a wall. And on the other side of the wall is earth. Because it's a basement. Then why is the cat gone? Irritated, I grabbed the girl's hair and brought my mouth close to her ear. "Listen to me, there is no ocean beyond the window." And driven by irritation, I blurted out all my secrets. I told her, "There is nothing outside this room." So the cat couldn't have gone anywhere. Yet, why is the cat gone? I interrogated her persistently, but the girl only cried. Thinking it couldn't be, I headed for the door to check outside the basement. I unlocked it and turned the knob. It wouldn't open. That shouldn't be possible. Panicking, I pulled the knob, but it didn't budge an inch, as if it had taken root. I had certainly unlocked it. It was the door I had just come through a moment ago. What does this mean? I slammed my body against the door. A heavy thud lingered in my shoulder. It felt as though earth was packed densely right on the other side. As I repeated slamming my body against it, I was struck by a strange sensation. What was outside this room again...? For some reason, I couldn't remember. Thud. Thud. Only the surface of the door continued to tremble faintly, like a cheap piece of room decoration. (End)
