The small town near my place has a population of around 6,000, but there are two unsolved murder cases there. Stuff like this is genuinely terrifying.

Shikaoi Nursing Home Murder Case, Hokkaido (1997) Around 12:30 AM on June 3, 1997, at the "Shakunage-so" special nursing home in Kita-cho, Shikaoi-cho, Kato-gun, Hokkaido, a 25-year-old female staff member on patrol found Tadashi Numakura (80), a resident of the "Botan Room," dead in his bed with blood coming from his neck, and immediately reported it to the Shintoku Police Station. Naturally, it was bedtime for the residents. The body was lying on its back in pajamas with the futon pulled up to the chest. There were no signs of a struggle or ransacking in the room. An emergency buzzer was located by the pillow in each room, but it was never pressed, and it is believed he was slashed with a blade all at once while asleep. According to the autopsy, the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock due to a severed carotid artery. The wound was about 5 centimeters long and about 1 depth centimeter, cut with a sharp blade from the left under-ear to the throat. The estimated time of death is around midnight. Shikaoi Elderly Woman Murder Case, Hokkaido (November 2003) Around 9:45 PM on November 29, 2003, Yukie Furuya (71 at the time), unemployed, living at 2-31 Izumi-cho, Shikaoi-cho, Kato-gun, Hokkaido, was found dead in her bedroom with blood coming from her neck by her brother-in-law who lived next door. The brother-in-law found it suspicious that the lights in Furuya's house were not turned on even after nightfall, so he went to check on her and found Furuya collapsed on the floor beside her bedroom bed. When discovered, Furuya was wearing pajamas. The autopsy revealed that Furuya's cause of death was hemorrhagic shock. Based on the condition of the body and the scene, she is believed to have been murdered by someone between the night of the 27th and the night of the 29th. There was a wound about 10 centimeters long on the right side of her neck, apparently cut with a sharp blade, and a large amount of bloodstains remained on the surrounding floor. No weapon has been found. At the time of the incident, no screams or sounds of a struggle were heard, but in a room different from where the body was found, offerings for the family Buddhist altar were scattered on the floor, and there were signs that chest drawers had been opened. When discovered, the front door was unlocked, and there were no signs of forced entry by breaking the lock or entering through a window. There's a theory that the best way to get away with murder is to sneak into a stranger's house, stab them, and leave, and this is literally that.
