Since the mood has gotten a bit strange, here's another one to cleanse your palate. It's Sakyo Komatsu's "The Forgotten Land."
A strange rumor was quietly and earnestly being whispered among astronauts stationed in space. It was said that there was a piece of land drifting somewhere between the Earth and the Moon, and that buildings were actually erected upon it.
Eventually, a group of astronauts discovered this land and landed on it to investigate. There was not a single person there, and the buildings were shrines and churches—temples of various sects from all times and places. However, strangely enough, inside these temples, there were no objects of worship whatsoever, such as Buddha statues or crucifixes.
Then, the astronauts discovered a diary written in Latin by someone.
"At last, resupplies from Earth have completely stopped." "○○ and ○○ have also died. I am the only one still surviving." "Have the people of Earth forgotten about us?" "Will the day ever come when the people of Earth believe in us again...?"
The diary ended there, implying that the author must have died as well.
You probably understand by now. That place was the "Land of the Gods." Because people lost their faith, the gods, who subsisted on it, vanished.
