The backstory told by the villain in the video game 'BioShock Infinite.'
The setting is America in 1890.
The villain is a white man who belonged to the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army and fought against Native Americans in the Indian Wars (or so he claims).
One day, a fellow soldier in his unit approached him and said, "I hear you have Native American blood in your veins."
According to the villain, this was "a baseless and slanderous accusation," but ever since that day, he began to feel alienated within his unit.
It wasn't that he was being insulted or harassed, but the attitude of his comrades felt somewhat distant, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was "not being accepted as a true brother-in-arms."
Then, when he participated in a battle that would later be called the Wounded Knee Massacre (which was hardly a battle, but rather a one-sided slaughter), he bravely led the charge into enemy territory, set fire to tents housing unresisting women, children, and the sick, tortured captured Native Americans to death, and committed every imaginable atrocity.
Praised as a "hero" by his comrades for his performance in this fight, he felt that he had finally been "recognized as a true white man."
